Hong Kong has taken another major step toward modernizing its financial infrastructure by introducing round-the-clock settlement for tokenized bank deposits using blockchain technology. The initiative aims to improve transaction efficiency, strengthen liquidity management, and accelerate the adoption of digital assets within the traditional banking system.

On November 2, 2026, the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) announced an expansion of EnsembleTX, the pilot phase of Project Ensemble, enabling participating financial institutions to settle tokenized deposit transactions using tokenized central bank money at any time.

Hong Kong Expands Blockchain Settlement Infrastructure

The upgraded infrastructure allows banks to process interbank settlements beyond conventional operating hours, addressing a significant limitation of traditional financial systems.

Previously, EnsembleTX relied on Hong Kong’s Real Time Gross Settlement system to facilitate transactions involving tokenized deposits and digital assets.

With the latest development, participating institutions can now settle eligible transactions continuously, improving operational flexibility and supporting the growing demand for always-available financial services.

According to the HKMA, the initiative currently involves 12 participating banks and 20 industry pioneers, reflecting increasing institutional interest in blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

The expansion is expected to support corporate treasury operations, tokenized investment products, and more efficient liquidity transfers.

Standard Chartered Introduces Tokenized Deposit Services

Alongside the regulatory development, Standard Chartered announced the launch of its tokenized deposit solution for corporate clients in Hong Kong.

Built on the bank’s proprietary blockchain infrastructure, the service enables real-time transfers between participating banks through EnsembleTX.

The solution supports institutional treasury management, investment transactions, and liquidity operations while maintaining the safeguards associated with regulated commercial bank deposits.

China Asset Management, Finloop, and PantherTrade have already conducted live transactions involving tokenized deposits and tokenized money market funds.

Standard Chartered is also collaborating with Fireblocks and HashKey to expand connectivity across the institutional digital asset ecosystem.

Hong Kong Strengthens Its Digital Finance Ambitions

The development represents an important milestone in Hong Kong’s broader strategy to establish itself as a leading global digital asset hub.

Unlike conventional cryptocurrencies, tokenized bank deposits represent money held within regulated banking institutions, combining blockchain functionality with established financial safeguards.

The HKMA and Securities and Futures Commission will continue coordinating efforts to expand tokenization applications and strengthen market infrastructure.

However, wider adoption will depend on institutional participation, interoperability, regulatory compliance, and demonstrated operational benefits.

The introduction of continuous settlement signals a shift from experimental blockchain projects toward practical financial applications.

As tokenized deposits gain institutional acceptance, Hong Kong’s latest initiative could help reshape how banks manage liquidity, execute transactions, and settle digital financial assets across global markets.
