Standard Chartered has introduced a new cryptocurrency trading service for affluent clients in the United Arab Emirates (UAE), allowing eligible investors to buy and sell Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum’s Ether (ETH) directly through their existing banking relationships.
The announcement marks a significant expansion of the bank’s digital asset offerings as traditional financial institutions increasingly explore opportunities in the cryptocurrency market. Standard Chartered described the initiative as the first cryptocurrency trading service of its kind offered by an international bank to wealth management clients in the UAE.
How Standard Chartered’s UAE Crypto Trading Service Works
The newly launched platform enables eligible customers to trade cryptocurrencies without using external cryptocurrency exchanges or maintaining separate digital wallets. Instead, transactions are conducted through a closed-loop banking system, with Standard Chartered facilitating cryptocurrency custody and settlement.
The service has been developed through collaboration between the bank’s Wealth and Retail Banking and Corporate and Investment Banking divisions, alongside Zodia Markets, a digital asset company backed by Standard Chartered’s innovation and ventures arm, SC Ventures.
Initially, the cryptocurrency trading service will be available to clients classified as Professional Investors under the applicable regulatory framework. The offering is not intended for the broader retail banking market at this stage.
Why the UAE Is a Key Market for Standard Chartered’s Crypto Expansion
The launch also highlights the UAE’s growing importance as a global destination for digital asset businesses. The country has established regulatory frameworks designed to support cryptocurrency innovation while strengthening investor protection and financial market oversight.
Standard Chartered considers the UAE a strategically important market for its wealth management operations. The bank believes increasing institutional interest in cryptocurrencies and greater regulatory clarity are creating opportunities to integrate digital assets into conventional financial services.
The latest development builds on Standard Chartered’s earlier expansion into institutional cryptocurrency trading. In July 2025, the bank introduced Bitcoin and Ether spot trading services for institutional clients through its UK branch, strengthening its position in the digital asset market.
By extending cryptocurrency trading access to eligible affluent customers, Standard Chartered is expanding its digital asset strategy beyond institutional investors.
The bank has also indicated that it intends to explore introducing similar services in additional markets, although specific expansion timelines have not been disclosed.
What the Crypto Trading Launch Means for Wealthy Investors
The initiative reflects a broader shift in the financial industry, where established banks are increasingly incorporating cryptocurrency products into their traditional service offerings.
For wealthy investors, the integration of cryptocurrency trading into an established banking platform could simplify access to digital assets while reducing the operational complexity associated with independent exchanges.
However, cryptocurrencies remain subject to significant price volatility, and access through a regulated banking institution does not eliminate the financial risks associated with digital asset investments.
