HSBC is preparing to launch its Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin, officially named HSBC RedCoin, as the bank moves deeper into the regulated digital asset market in Hong Kong.

The bank plans to introduce the stablecoin in the second half of 2026 under a stablecoin issuer licence granted by the Hong Kong Monetary Authority (HKMA) in April. At launch, RedCoin will be available exclusively through HSBC’s PayMe platform and the HSBC HK Mobile App.

HSBC RedCoin to Launch Through PayMe and Mobile Banking

HSBC will take a phased approach to the rollout. The initial focus will be on everyday payment use cases, including person-to-person (P2P) transfers and person-to-merchant (P2M) payments. The bank plans to subsequently expand RedCoin’s applications to wholesale corporate and institutional use cases.

According to HSBC, each RedCoin will be fully backed by high-quality, highly liquid assets held in segregated accounts. The stablecoin is designed to maintain a 1:1 redemption value against the Hong Kong dollar, with the bank positioning the initiative around regulated digital payments and tokenised financial products.

HSBC’s Hong Kong CEO and Head of Retail Banking and Wealth, Maggie Ng, said the launch is intended to support financial innovation while maintaining a focus on security, trust and simplicity.

Hong Kong’s Stablecoin Rules and Customer Awareness

The announcement comes as Hong Kong develops its regulatory framework for stablecoins. The city’s Stablecoins Ordinance established a licensing regime for fiat-referenced stablecoin issuers, with the framework coming into effect in August 2025. HSBC became one of the first institutions to receive a licence under the new regime.

HSBC is also planning an educational campaign aimed at helping customers understand stablecoins, prevent scams and learn how redemption mechanisms work. The initiative will be distributed through the bank’s digital platforms and social media channels.

The bank’s own research indicates growing awareness among Hong Kong customers. A survey of 1,060 HSBC customers found that 74% recognised at least one potential stablecoin use case. Digital asset trading and tokenised investments were identified by 57% of respondents, while P2P transfers were recognised by 53%. Cross-border remittances and merchant payments each received 52%.

However, the survey also highlighted gaps in understanding. While 60% correctly identified stablecoins as fiat-backed digital assets, 26% believed they were issued by governments.

HSBC has stressed that RedCoin has not yet been issued and warned customers about fraudulent tokens falsely claiming an association with the bank. The planned launch will mark HSBC’s latest move into regulated digital assets as Hong Kong seeks to establish itself as a hub for blockchain-based financial services.
