Standard Chartered has launched a tokenized deposit service for corporate clients in Hong Kong, the first market in its global network to receive it. The service operates on the bank’s blockchain infrastructure and connects with the Hong Kong Monetary Authority’s EnsembleTX platform, enabling round-the-clock transfers between participating institutions.

How Standard Chartered’s Tokenized Deposit Service Works

Transactions can settle in central bank money, including wholesale central bank digital currency, rather than relying solely on conventional banking hours. It targets corporate treasurers, financial institutions and digital asset businesses. Clients can use commercial bank deposits for treasury management, investments and transfers within corporate groups.

China AMC, Finloop and PantherTrade have completed live transactions involving tokenized money market funds through EnsembleTX. Fireblocks and HashKey have also joined the ecosystem, connecting digital asset infrastructure and licensed participants.

Hong Kong’s EnsembleTX Connects Banks and Digital Asset Firms

Standard Chartered has participated in Project Ensemble since 2024, helping develop and test transactions. EnsembleTX, introduced in November 2025, is the next phase of the project. The Hong Kong Monetary Authority is also exploring regulated stablecoins as potential settlement assets for tokenized financial instruments.

The bank plans expansion, but has not named markets or a timetable. Earlier initiatives include blockchain deposit transfers with Ant International and a cross-bank ledger transaction with HSBC.

What 24/7 Tokenized Deposits Mean for Corporate Finance

The launch moves tokenized deposits into commercial banking. Its proposition is continuous movement of regulated bank money connected to central bank settlement. This could help institutions trading tokenized assets across time zones. Unlike privately issued stablecoins, tokenized deposits remain claims on banks, so confidence depends on the issuer’s balance sheet, regulation and redemption arrangements. Interoperability will therefore be as important as practical speed.

For corporate treasuries, 24/7 settlement may reduce the need to pre-fund accounts or leave liquidity idle while traditional payment systems are closed. It may also reduce counterparty exposure between trade and settlement. However, those benefits depend on broad participation, reliable interoperability and clear operating rules.

Hong Kong is building a bridge between conventional finance and tokenized markets. Standard Chartered’s launch gives the city a practical institutional use case, while Fireblocks and HashKey could help connect banking services with digital asset businesses.

Adoption remains the test. Tokenized deposits must demonstrate real transaction volumes, cost advantages, robust safeguards and dependable access to central bank money. Expansion overseas will also depend on whether other jurisdictions develop compatible settlement infrastructure. For now, Hong Kong provides Standard Chartered with a live testing ground for bringing programmable money into mainstream corporate finance.
