Global cryptocurrency exchange Bitget has announced plans to acquire a licensed digital asset exchange in Thailand, marking another step in its strategy to expand across Southeast Asia. The proposed acquisition would allow the company to establish a regulated local presence in Thailand’s growing cryptocurrency market.
The transaction involves GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics (Thailand), a Bangkok-based company operating a licensed digital asset exchange and brokerage. Bitget intends to complete the acquisition through its interest in BTGT Management (Thailand), subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.
Bitget Targets Thailand’s Regulated Crypto Market
Under the proposed agreement, Japan-based GMO Internet and its subsidiary, GMO-Z.com Holdings (Thailand), alongside other shareholders, will transfer their ownership interests in GMO-Z.com Cryptonomics to BTGT Management or a designated entity.
The acquisition would provide Bitget with access to an established local operator, enabling the company to leverage existing regulatory expertise, market knowledge and operational infrastructure rather than building its business entirely from scratch.
Thailand has maintained a regulated approach toward cryptocurrency trading, requiring digital asset exchanges and related service providers to operate under the supervision of the country’s Securities and Exchange Commission.
For international exchanges, acquiring an existing licensed business offers a potential route to entering the market while meeting local compliance requirements.
Regulatory Approval Remains a Key Requirement
The transaction has not yet been finalized, and completion remains dependent on regulatory clearance, including approval for the proposed change of control.
Once the necessary approvals are secured, Bitget intends to introduce its trading platform to Thai customers through a locally operated exchange.
Bitget CEO Gracy Chen emphasized the importance of understanding local regulatory requirements and developing a sustainable operational presence.
According to the company’s announcement, Thailand represents an important market within Southeast Asia’s evolving digital asset ecosystem. Bitget aims to combine its international trading capabilities with the experience of an established local business.
Southeast Asia Emerges as a Strategic Growth Market
The proposed acquisition reflects a broader trend among global cryptocurrency platforms seeking regulated expansion opportunities across Southeast Asia.
As digital asset adoption develops, exchanges are increasingly prioritizing regulatory compliance, localized services and long-term market participation.
For Bitget, the Thai acquisition could strengthen its regional position while creating opportunities to serve customers through a locally compliant trading platform.
However, the company’s ability to launch operations will depend on completing the acquisition and satisfying Thailand’s regulatory requirements.
The development highlights how regulatory authorization and local partnerships are becoming central to international cryptocurrency expansion strategies, particularly in markets where authorities are tightening oversight of digital asset services.
