Circle has acquired IBM’s blockchain patent portfolio, adding nearly 1,000 issued patents to its intellectual property holdings in a move that strengthens its position in blockchain infrastructure and digital finance.

Circle Adds Nearly 1,000 IBM Blockchain Patents

The acquisition includes more than 680 patent families covering blockchain technology, enterprise infrastructure, banking, financial services, supply chain management, insurance, and cloud computing. While the companies confirmed the transaction, financial details were not disclosed.

With the deal, Circle becomes one of the largest holders of blockchain-related patents in the United States. The company said the expanded portfolio will support the continued development of its blockchain-based products, including the USDC stablecoin ecosystem, the Circle Payments Network, Arc, and infrastructure designed for tokenised assets and AI-powered financial applications.

Circle General Counsel Sarah Wilson said IBM has played a major role in advancing enterprise technology over the years, adding that the newly acquired patents will help accelerate innovation as digital finance continues to evolve. She noted that intellectual property remains a critical part of Circle’s long-term strategy as the company builds infrastructure for internet-native financial services.

The transaction also marks a shift in IBM’s blockchain strategy. Once among the world’s most active developers of enterprise blockchain technology, IBM accumulated one of the industry’s largest patent portfolios over the past decade through extensive research and development. By transferring these assets to Circle, IBM is effectively placing its blockchain intellectual property into the hands of a company actively commercialising blockchain-based financial infrastructure.

Beyond the patent transfer, Circle and IBM said they will explore opportunities for future collaboration, although neither company disclosed specific plans or timelines.

The acquisition comes as Circle continues to expand its role beyond stablecoin issuance into broader financial infrastructure. The company has been investing in cross-border payments, tokenisation services and enterprise blockchain tools as regulated digital assets gain wider acceptance among financial institutions.

Demand for blockchain infrastructure has also increased following the introduction of clearer regulatory frameworks for stablecoins and tokenised financial products in several major markets. As traditional financial institutions accelerate their adoption of blockchain technology, ownership of foundational intellectual property is becoming increasingly valuable.

What the IBM Patent Deal Means for Circle’s Future

By securing IBM’s extensive blockchain patent portfolio, Circle gains greater control over technologies that underpin digital payments, smart contracts and enterprise blockchain applications. The expanded intellectual property base is expected to support future product development while strengthening the company’s competitive position as blockchain infrastructure becomes a core component of the evolving global financial system.
