They are increasingly being built to act on behalf of people and businesses, from searching for products and booking services to accessing APIs, purchasing computing resources and initiating financial transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That shift is creating a new question for the financial system: what happens when an AI agent gets access to money?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The answer is already beginning to take shape. Payment networks such as Mastercard and Visa are developing infrastructure that allows AI agents to transact under predefined permissions, while companies including Circle and Coinbase are building systems around programmable digital wallets and stablecoins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The important distinction is that an agent being able to control money does not necessarily mean the agent legally owns the money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AI Agents Are Already Getting Spending Authority<\/strong> <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are two main approaches to agentic payments. In delegated commerce, AI agents use payment methods owned by humans or businesses, with systems like Google\u2019s AP2, Visa and Mastercard focusing on verifying user intent and maintaining control. The second approach gives agents their own wallets, such as Circle\u2019s Agent Wallets, enabling them to hold and spend USDC programmatically. Developers can set spending limits and policies, allowing agents to make payments autonomously. In both models, humans or organisations retain overall authority while agents receive limited permission to execute transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Stablecoins Could Power Machine-to-Machine Payments<\/strong> <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is where stablecoins become particularly relevant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI agents may need to make payments that are much smaller and more frequent than traditional consumer transactions. An agent could pay another software service for an API request, purchase computing power or access a specific piece of data.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mastercard is already preparing for this possibility. In June, it launched Agent Pay for Machines with more than 30 initial partners, including Coinbase, Cloudflare, Stripe, OKX and Adyen. The initiative is designed to support machine-driven transactions and settlement across traditional payment methods and stablecoins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jorn Lambert, Chief Product Officer at Mastercard, said, \u201cAgent Pay for Machines will create the conditions for a superbloom of AI business models.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Coinbase&#8217;s Head of Stablecoin Business Development Nina Coughlin similarly said, \u201cAI agents are creating entirely new forms of commerce that require payments to move at machine speed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The significance is not simply that an AI can purchase a product. Software could potentially buy services from other software continuously, with transactions occurring in the background as agents complete their tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A logistics agent could pay for data, monitoring and cloud services. A business agent could purchase software or computing resources. Each transaction could happen automatically within predefined rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Can an AI Agent Legally Own Money?<\/strong> <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For now, the answer is generally no.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An AI agent is software, not a legal person. It cannot independently become a shareholder, open a regulated bank account in its own name, enter contracts as a legal entity or be sued like a person or company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A blockchain wallet complicates the issue because control of a wallet can be reduced to possession of cryptographic credentials. If an AI system controls those credentials, it may technically be capable of moving the assets inside the wallet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But technical control does not automatically establish legal ownership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The economic owner would generally be the person or organisation that created, funded or operates the wallet and authorised the agent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That becomes more complicated if an agent starts earning money. If an AI agent provides an API and receives USDC for every transaction, the blockchain can record the payment, but someone still needs to account for that revenue, determine who owns the underlying business and deal with taxation and regulation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sathvik Vishwanath, Chief Executive Officer and Co-Founder of Unocoin, has highlighted this uncertainty. In an August 2026 article, Vishwanath wrote, \u201cAI agents that transact autonomously on blockchain networks currently sit in a grey area in most jurisdictions, and frameworks for identifying and holding these agents accountable are only beginning to take shape.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That means the challenge is not simply giving an AI a wallet. It is establishing who stands behind the wallet and the transactions it executes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Who Is Responsible When the Agent Gets It Wrong?<\/strong> <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Liability could become the hardest issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Imagine a company gives an AI procurement agent permission to spend $5,000 per day with approved vendors. If the agent makes a poor purchase within those limits, the company may still be responsible because the transaction was authorised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But what happens if the agent exceeds its instructions, is manipulated by an external source or sends money to an unauthorised wallet?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Responsibility could involve the user, the company deploying the agent, the AI developer, the wallet provider, the payment network or the merchant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is why agentic payment systems are increasingly focused on identity, authorisation, spending limits and audit trails. The objective is to establish what a user authorised, what the agent was allowed to do and whether the final transaction stayed within those boundaries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>India Is Preparing for Agentic UPI Payments<\/strong> <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The development is also reaching India&#8217;s traditional payment infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The National Payments Corporation of India is working on a registry to identify and monitor AI agents conducting UPI transactions. The initiative is expected to form part of a Unified Agentic Protocol and could initially focus on smaller, frequent payments before expanding into more complex use cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is significant because UPI already operates at enormous scale. Autonomous software could potentially initiate transactions far more frequently than individual human users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The system will therefore need to distinguish between authorised agents and potentially rogue systems while maintaining clear accountability for transactions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>A Machine Economy Is Taking Shape<\/strong> <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI agents do not yet function as autonomous economic actors. For finance, authorization, identification, and legal accountability, they nevertheless rely on people and organizations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The degree of software autonomy is evolving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eventually, an agent might find a service, haggle over the cost, determine that the service is required, pay, get the outcome, and then pay another agent to finish the next duty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cards, bank accounts, UPI and stablecoins could all become payment rails for this emerging machine economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The future may not involve AI agents legally owning billions of dollars. Instead, millions of agents could receive limited, programmable financial authority, with humans and organisations remaining ultimately responsible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The technology is moving quickly. The legal framework is still catching up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The key question is no longer simply whether AI can spend money.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It is who gives the agent that authority, how that authority is enforced, and who answers when the machine gets it wrong.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>21st September 2026 By Anjali Kochhar AI agents are moving beyond answering questions and generating content.
