The selected projects cover areas including banking, securities, insurance and pension services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first cohort involves <strong>30 financial institutions and 27 technology partners<\/strong>, with the projects selected from nearly 100 proposals. Regulators considered factors such as innovation, technical complexity and potential value to the financial sector when choosing the use cases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The trials are expected to explore a broad range of applications. These include agent-initiated commerce, payments, customer onboarding and liquidity management, alongside other financial workflows where AI agents could potentially automate tasks and support decision-making.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among the participants are major financial and technology companies, including <strong>HSBC Life, Hang Seng Bank, Google and IBM<\/strong>, highlighting the involvement of both established financial institutions and global technology providers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Hong Kong Regulators Focus on AI Risk, Security and Governance<\/strong> <strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The programme is designed to provide a controlled environment where financial institutions can experiment with AI while regulators monitor issues such as reliability, data security, governance and operational risks. This approach could help authorities develop regulatory frameworks alongside the technology rather than waiting for widespread adoption before addressing potential risks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Technical trials are scheduled to begin later in 2026 at <strong>Cyberport<\/strong>, giving participating firms an opportunity to evaluate their AI systems in practical financial scenarios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hong Kong\u2019s move comes as financial centres across Asia compete to establish themselves as leaders in artificial intelligence and fintech. AI adoption is increasingly becoming a strategic issue for banks, asset managers and insurers, particularly as businesses look to automate operations and improve customer services.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The GenAI Sandbox++ could therefore play a role beyond testing individual AI applications.
