Despite the decline in reported cases, victims continued to lose substantial amounts of money, with total losses reaching approximately HK$16.5 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Why Investment Scam Losses Remain High Despite Fewer Cases <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The figures underline a growing gap between the number of cases and the scale of financial damage. While fewer people may be reporting investment scams, criminals are increasingly using schemes capable of extracting larger sums from individual victims.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investment scams typically involve fraudsters promising unusually high returns through opportunities in areas such as stocks, cryptocurrencies, foreign exchange or other financial products. Victims are often approached through social media, messaging platforms, dating applications or online advertisements before being directed to seemingly legitimate investment platforms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>How Fraudsters Build Trust Before Taking Larger Investments <\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fraudsters may initially allow victims to withdraw small amounts of money, creating the impression that the platform is genuine. Once larger amounts are deposited, however, withdrawals can be blocked or victims may be asked to pay additional fees and taxes. By the time victims realise they have been deceived, their money has often been transferred through multiple accounts, making recovery difficult.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hong Kong authorities have been increasing efforts to combat these scams, including public awareness campaigns and closer cooperation between law enforcement agencies and financial institutions. Authorities have also urged residents to verify investment opportunities carefully and remain cautious about unsolicited offers promising guaranteed or unusually high returns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The continuing scale of losses shows that awareness alone may not be enough to prevent financial fraud. Scam operators are becoming more adept at impersonating legitimate financial institutions, creating convincing websites and using fabricated investment records to gain victims&#8217; trust.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The decline in reported cases is nevertheless a positive sign and could indicate that enforcement and public education measures are having an impact.
