This move is part of Hong Kong\u2019s broader strategy to enhance its regulatory framework for virtual assets under principles of \u201csame activity, same risks, same regulation\u201d as stated by the government in its <a href=\"https:\/\/gia.info.gov.hk\/general\/202210\/31\/P2022103000454_404805_1_1667173469522.pdf\"><strong>Policy Statement on Development of Virtual Assets.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Here\u2019s what we know:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During the consultation, industry stakeholders, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.sfc.hk\/edistributionWeb\/gateway\/EN\/consultation\/openCommentFile?refNo=23CP1&amp;commentRefNo=71\"><strong>Hong Kong Virtual Asset Industry Association<\/strong><\/a>, voiced concerns about restrictive measures on tradable currencies and rigorous customer due diligence requirements. The proposed system includes a transaction threshold of 8000 Hong Kong dollars and mandates the appointment of compliance and money laundering reporting officers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These measures, intended to combat money laundering and financial terrorism, have sparked fears among small OTC businesses about potential cost pressures and loss of customers who may seek less regulated markets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Additionally, there\u2019s a discussion about whether to exempt popular stablecoins like USDT and USDC from trading restrictions. The limited number of approved cryptocurrencies for trading has raised worries about the potential migration of businesses to more accommodating regulatory environments.
